The firm’s attorneys were also primary participants in one of Colorado’s largest trials involving environmental mining pollutants. The case involved Newmont Mining’s efforts to recover on insurance policies dating back to the early 1950s after it spent an enormous sum of money reclaiming polluted land and water. The reclamation involved land and water around a) the Idarado Mine, which is near Telluride and b) California Gulch, which is near Leadville. The Newmont Mining case involved 65 volumes of court files, approximately 10,000 trial exhibits and approximately 50 lawyers. The Denver trial judge told The Denver Post, “I’ve been a district judge for 27 years and this has been the most complex and legally challenging case I’ve ever had.”
